A porch is usually attached to the house and it is located at the front of the house (some porches wrap around the house). Porches are constructed so they are elevated off the ground by a few feet. Compared to decks and patios, porches are more narrow and they are almost always covered. A porch allows you to sit in front of your house without being exposed to direct sun or rain.
A deck is also attached to a house but it is usually located at the back of the house. Like a porch, a deck is elevated off the ground; however, it is usually uncovered. For this reason, a deck can sometimes be called a “sun deck”. Most decks extend away from the house giving you and your friends more space to move around.
A patio can be attached or detached from the house. But, unlike decks and porches, patios are constructed directly on the ground – they are not elevated. They can be large, small, square, rectangular, oval, circular, or any shape you desire.
Materials and Maintenance: Porches and decks are made of wood so they need to be painted and sealed to protect the wood from the elements. Patios are usually constructed with heartier materials such as concrete or brick. Because of this, patios require minimal maintenance.
