Types of Water Irrigation Systems

Above-Ground Sprinklers have all components (pipes, hoses, and sprinkler heads) above the ground. The sprinkler head can rotate, oscillate, or be stationary. The biggest benefit of an above ground sprinkler system is that they are easy to install.  However, they are not very efficient because sprayed water tends to evaporate and sometimes, the water jet does not direct the water perfectly.

In-Ground Sprinklers or under-ground sprinklers have their pipes buried under the ground. The sprinkler heads are usually flush to the surface of the ground. When the water turns on, the pressure causes the sprinkler heads to rise above the ground. This type of irrigation system often connects to a timer so it will spray water at a designated time.

Drip Irrigation involves a water hose with punctured holes distributed along the length of the hose. The hose is draped along the landscape and when the water is turned on, water drips out of the holes. This type of irrigation system is efficient because it loses less water to evaporation.  As well, the water drips directly to the soil where the roots are located.

Common problems with water irrigation systems include broken or blocked sprinkler heads and broken or cracked pipes/hoses. Sometimes irrigation systems are not broken, rather they need to be adjusted or re-aligned. For example, water sprinklers may spit and splutter, or they may send out a mist instead of a jet of water. Sometimes the sprinkler sprays water too far or the water is not far enough so there are patches of dry land. No matter what your problem is, please call Arcadian Landscape for San Diego irrigation repair services.
