Landscape Design and Construction in Del Mar Highlands
Arcadian Landscape designs and builds yards in Del Mar Highlands, the Carmel Valley neighborhood near Del Mar Heights Road and El Camino Real. Evan Weisman leads each project, from the first site walk through hardscape, irrigation, lighting, and planting. We hold California C-27 License #978145 and are bonded and insured.

Del Mar Highlands yards rarely give you a flat, easy lot. Many sit on graded pads with a slope falling away behind the fence, and the soil under the topsoil is often compacted fill. That shapes every decision we make before a single plant goes in.
What does the ground in Del Mar Highlands actually do to a new patio?
Compacted fill holds water in the wet months and bakes hard in summer. A patio set on a thin base will settle in a season or two.
For pavers we set four to six inches of Class II base, compacted in lifts, and we pitch the surface for drainage away from the house. On a pad that sits near a slope edge we also look at where the runoff leaves the property. If it has nowhere to go, we build the drain first.
Retaining walls and slope edges
Walls over three feet, measured from the bottom of the footing, need engineering and a permit in the City of San Diego. We confirm that before we quote, not after. Footings go into undisturbed soil, and we back the wall with drainage rock and pipe so water does not push on it every winter.

How does the coastal marine layer change what we plant?
Del Mar Highlands sits inland enough to get warmer afternoons than the beach, but the May gray and June gloom still hold the mornings cool and damp. Fall brings the opposite: dry Santa Ana days that stress anything on a weak irrigation schedule.
We plan for both. Drought-tolerant planting, mulched beds, and drip lines with a pressure regulator on every valve keep the yard steady through the swing. Our drip zones run around 30 PSI at the emitter. Higher than that and fittings blow off, lower and the far end of the slope goes dry.
What can we build for a Del Mar Highlands backyard?
- Landscape design with a plan you review before we build
- Paver patios, walkways, and driveways
- Hardscape including retaining walls and seating walls
- Low-voltage landscape lighting
- Irrigation repair and install
- Water features and BBQ islands
Every project is a collaboration between designer and homeowner. You tell us how the yard gets used. We tell you honestly what the lot will and will not support.
What should you check with the HOA before we start?
Many Carmel Valley communities run design review. Wall height, fence changes, lighting, and plant lists are the usual sticking points. Get your approval in hand early, because material orders and crew scheduling both depend on it.
If a review is required for your lot, we can supply plans and material details for your submittal.
Nearby areas we work in
We also build in Carmel Valley, Del Mar Heights, Pacific Highlands Ranch, Torrey Hills, and Del Mar Mesa. If you are somewhere close by, the same approach applies.
