BBQ Island Installation in San Diego
Custom BBQ Islands Built for San Diego Living
In San Diego, outdoor cooking is not a summer activity -- it is a way of life. With 260+ days of sunshine and mild evenings year-round, a BBQ island turns your backyard into a working kitchen where you actually want to spend time. Not a portable grill on a concrete slab, but a permanent, built-in cooking station designed around how you cook and entertain.
At Arcadian Landscape, we design and build custom BBQ islands that are integrated into your landscape -- not bolted on as an afterthought. Evan Weisman works with you to plan the layout, select materials, choose appliances, and coordinate gas, electrical, and plumbing so everything works seamlessly from day one.
Every island we build is constructed on a reinforced concrete pad with a steel-framed structure, stone or stucco veneer, and countertops rated for outdoor use. These are permanent installations engineered to withstand San Diego's sun, salt air, and occasional rain for decades.
Outdoor Cooking & Entertainment
From a focused grilling station to a full outdoor kitchen with seating, fire, and entertainment space.
Custom BBQ Islands
A BBQ island is the centerpiece of outdoor cooking. We build them in every configuration -- straight bars, L-shapes, U-shapes, and curved designs that follow the contour of your patio. The frame is welded steel studs sheathed in cement board and finished with stone veneer, stucco, or tile that matches your home's exterior.
Standard islands include a built-in grill, access doors for propane or storage, and a countertop with enough workspace for prep and plating. From there, you can add side burners, warming drawers, trash pullouts, paper towel holders, and any other accessory that fits your cooking style. We size the island to your patio and your budget -- from compact 6-foot stations to 14-foot entertainment bars with seating on both sides.
Outdoor Kitchens
An outdoor kitchen goes beyond a BBQ island. It is a full cooking and entertaining space with running water, refrigeration, multiple cooking surfaces, and dedicated prep and cleanup zones. We design outdoor kitchens that function like indoor kitchens -- with the same workflow efficiency and none of the walls.
A typical outdoor kitchen includes a built-in grill, side burner or power burner, sink with hot and cold water, under-counter refrigerator, and ample counter space. Premium builds add pizza ovens, smokers, kegerators, ice makers, and warming drawers. We run gas, water, electrical, and drainage as part of the project, coordinating with licensed plumbers and electricians to make sure everything is up to code.
Fire Pits
A fire pit extends your outdoor living season into the cooler months and creates a natural gathering point after dark. We build gas and wood-burning fire pits in every style -- round, square, rectangular, and linear. Materials range from natural stone and fire brick to modern concrete and corten steel.
Gas fire pits are the most popular option in San Diego. They light instantly, produce no smoke, and shut off with a switch -- making them practical for nightly use in neighborhoods where smoke can be an issue. We plumb a dedicated gas line from the house meter and install a key valve or electronic ignition for safe, convenient operation. For homeowners who want the crackle and smell of real wood, we build traditional fire pits with spark screens and proper ventilation.
Entertainment Areas
The best outdoor spaces are designed for more than cooking. They are places where people gather, sit, talk, and stay for hours. We design entertainment areas that combine BBQ islands with bar seating, dining zones, lounge areas, and fire features -- all arranged to encourage conversation and make hosting effortless.
Layout is everything. The cook should be able to face guests while grilling. Seating should be close enough for conversation but far enough from the grill to avoid smoke. Traffic flow between the house, the bar, and the dining area should feel natural. We plan these details during the design phase so the finished space works intuitively from the first gathering.
Built-in Appliances
The appliances make the island. We work with premium brands that are engineered for outdoor use -- stainless steel construction rated for salt air, UV exposure, and temperature extremes. Built-in grills from manufacturers like DCS, Lynx, Bull, and Blaze are the core of most islands, available in 30-inch to 42-inch widths depending on how much cooking surface you need.
Beyond the grill, popular built-in options include power burners for wok cooking and large pots, side burners for sauces and sides, pizza ovens for wood or gas-fired baking, under-counter refrigerators and ice makers for cold storage, kegerators for draft beer, and sinks with hot water for on-site cleanup. We help you choose appliances that match your cooking habits and budget, then build the island around them for a perfect fit.
What to Consider Before You Build
Space and Placement
The island needs to be close enough to the house for convenient access to the indoor kitchen but positioned to keep smoke and heat away from seating areas and windows. We recommend at least 3 feet of clearance on all working sides and 36 to 42 inches of aisle space between the island and any adjacent walls or structures. For islands with bar seating, add 24 inches per stool.
Size and Shape
Island size is driven by two things: available patio space and the number of features you want. A compact 6-foot straight island with a grill and access doors fits most patios. An 8 to 10-foot L-shaped island adds counter space and room for a side burner or sink. A 12 to 14-foot U-shape or curved island creates a full outdoor kitchen with seating. We design to your space -- not the other way around.
Countertop Selection
Outdoor countertops need to handle heat, moisture, UV, and food prep without staining or degrading. Granite is our most recommended material -- it is heat-resistant, stain-resistant when sealed, and available in dozens of colors and patterns. Concrete countertops offer a modern industrial look and can be custom-colored. Tile provides design flexibility at a lower price point. We help you select the right material for your style and usage patterns.
Features and Accessories
Start with the essentials -- a quality grill and enough counter space to work comfortably. Then add features based on how you cook. Frequent entertainers benefit from a sink and refrigerator. Pizza lovers should consider a built-in pizza oven. Beer enthusiasts might want a kegerator. We build the island to accommodate your current wishlist while leaving room to add features later if your budget allows.

BBQ Island FAQ
Custom BBQ island costs depend on size, materials, and built-in features. A basic island with a built-in grill, storage, and stone veneer typically starts around $8,000 to $15,000. Mid-range islands with granite countertops, side burner, and access doors run $15,000 to $30,000. Full outdoor kitchens with refrigeration, sinks, pizza ovens, and premium finishes can range from $30,000 to $75,000+. We provide itemized estimates during your free consultation.
Granite is the most popular choice for outdoor kitchen countertops in San Diego. It handles heat, UV exposure, and moisture without staining or cracking. Concrete countertops offer a modern look and can be custom-colored. Tile is a budget-friendly option with endless design possibilities. We avoid marble and some engineered stones outdoors because they can stain or discolor with prolonged sun exposure.
Plumbing is optional but recommended for outdoor kitchens that include a sink. A sink adds convenience for food prep and cleanup. We run hot and cold water lines from the house and install a drain that connects to the existing sewer or a dedicated grey water system. Gas lines for the grill and side burner also need to be run by a licensed plumber. We coordinate all plumbing and gas work as part of the project.
A standard BBQ island with grill, countertop, and stone veneer takes about 1 to 2 weeks from start to finish. More complex outdoor kitchens with plumbing, electrical, pergola covers, and adjacent patio work can take 3 to 6 weeks. We provide a project timeline before work begins so you can plan around the construction schedule.
Basic BBQ islands that do not involve gas lines, electrical, or plumbing generally do not require permits in San Diego. However, if the project includes gas plumbing, electrical outlets, a sink with drainage, or a roofed structure like a pergola, permits are typically required. Evan identifies permit needs during the design phase and manages the process so it does not delay your project.
