Paver Installation in San Diego
The Foundation of Great Outdoor Living
Pavers are the backbone of any well-built outdoor space. They define walkways, anchor patios, frame driveways, and connect every part of your landscape into a cohesive whole. In San Diego, where outdoor living is not seasonal but year-round, the quality of your paver installation directly affects how your property looks, functions, and holds its value for decades.
At Arcadian Landscape, we treat paver installation as a craft. Evan Weisman personally oversees every base preparation, material selection, and layout. We do not just drop pavers onto sand and call it done. Every project starts with proper excavation, compacted aggregate base, leveled bedding sand, and precision-cut borders that keep the entire system locked in place. The result is a surface that stays flat, drains correctly, and looks as good in year ten as it did on day one.
Whether you need a simple front walkway or a full driveway replacement with intricate patterns, we build it right the first time -- designed for San Diego's soil conditions and your specific property.
Paver Applications
From driveways that handle daily traffic to pool decks that stay cool underfoot, every installation is engineered for its purpose.
Driveway Pavers
A paver driveway is the single most impactful upgrade you can make to your home's curb appeal. Unlike poured concrete that cracks and stains over time, interlocking pavers distribute weight across thousands of individual units, flexing with the ground instead of fighting it. We install driveways with a minimum 6-inch compacted aggregate base to handle vehicle loads without settling.
San Diego's expansive clay soils are notorious for shifting. Our base preparation accounts for this. We excavate to the correct depth, compact in lifts, and install geotextile fabric where needed to prevent base migration. The finished surface sheds water efficiently and does not develop the hairline cracks that plague concrete driveways within the first few years.
Walkway Pavers
A walkway sets the tone before anyone steps inside your home. We design walkways that complement your home's architecture and connect naturally to the rest of your landscape -- front entry paths, side-yard connections, garden meandering paths, and utility routes to backyard gates.
Material choices range from tumbled travertine for a Mediterranean feel to clean-lined porcelain pavers for modern homes to rustic flagstone for naturalistic landscapes. We curve or angle walkways to follow the natural flow of your property rather than forcing straight lines that fight the terrain. Proper edging, compacted base, and polymeric sand joints ensure the walkway stays tight and weed-free for years.
Patio Pavers
A patio is where outdoor living actually happens -- meals, conversations, morning coffee, evening fire pits. Pavers give you a level, stable, and visually rich surface that works with furniture, grills, and foot traffic. We build patios as extensions of your indoor living space, matching material tones and textures to your home's interior palette.
For San Diego properties, we pay special attention to drainage pitch. Even though rain is infrequent, when it comes it comes hard. Every patio we build slopes away from your home's foundation at the correct grade, with permeable joint options available for properties in areas with strict stormwater management requirements. The result is a patio that performs in every season without ponding or erosion.
Pool Deck Pavers
Pool decks need to be slip-resistant, heat-reflective, and resistant to chlorine and salt. We select pavers specifically rated for pool environments -- textured surfaces that grip wet feet, lighter colors that stay cooler under San Diego's summer sun, and materials that will not fade or deteriorate from constant water exposure.
Travertine is our most popular pool deck material for its natural coolness and elegant look. We also install porcelain pavers with anti-slip ratings and tumbled concrete pavers that mimic natural stone at a lower price point. Every pool deck includes proper coping at the pool edge, integrated drainage, and a base system that prevents settling around the pool shell.
Paver Repair & Restoration
Existing paver surfaces settle, shift, and lose joint sand over time -- especially if the original installation cut corners on base preparation. We repair and restore paver driveways, patios, and walkways throughout San Diego. Our process includes lifting affected sections, re-compacting the base, re-leveling the bedding sand, resetting the pavers, and re-sanding all joints with polymeric sand.
If individual pavers are cracked, chipped, or permanently stained, we source matching replacements and swap them in. This is one of the biggest advantages of pavers over poured concrete -- you repair the section, not the entire surface. We also offer full re-sanding and sealing services that bring tired paver surfaces back to life without a complete replacement.

Durability That Outlasts Concrete
Interlocking pavers are rated to withstand over 8,000 PSI of compressive strength -- roughly three to four times stronger than poured concrete. They flex with soil movement rather than cracking, which is critical in San Diego where clay-heavy soils expand and contract with seasonal moisture changes. A properly installed paver surface will outlast a poured concrete surface by decades with significantly less maintenance.
Design Flexibility
Pavers come in hundreds of shapes, colors, textures, and sizes. You can create herringbone patterns for driveways, running bond for walkways, circular fan designs for courtyards, or random ashlar layouts for a natural stone look. Mix materials and colors for borders, inlays, and accent bands. This level of design control is simply not possible with poured concrete, stamped concrete, or asphalt.
Easy Repair and Replacement
When a poured concrete driveway cracks, you are looking at a costly full-surface replacement or an ugly patch that never quite matches. With pavers, you lift the damaged unit, replace it with an identical one, and re-sand the joint. The repair is invisible. This also applies when utility companies need to access underground lines -- pavers come up and go back down without destroying the surface. Over the lifetime of your property, this repairability saves thousands of dollars and endless frustration.
Our Paver Installation Process
From the first site visit to the final polymeric sand sweep, here is how we build paver surfaces that last.
Site Visit & Consultation
Evan visits your property to assess the terrain, soil type, drainage patterns, existing utilities, and access points. We discuss your goals -- material preferences, patterns, how the space will be used, and how the paver work integrates with the rest of your landscape. This visit is free and carries no obligation.
Design & Material Selection
We create a detailed layout showing dimensions, patterns, border treatments, and material specifications. You see samples of every paver option and choose the combination that fits your home's style. We calculate exact quantities, plan cut lines, and design the drainage pitch before any digging begins.
Excavation & Base Preparation
This is where the real work happens. We excavate to the required depth, install geotextile fabric where needed, and compact the aggregate base in lifts using plate compactors. The base is graded for drainage and checked with laser levels. Bedding sand is screeded to a uniform depth. Rushing this step is how paver jobs fail -- we never rush it.
Paver Setting & Finishing
Pavers are laid according to the approved pattern, cut precisely at borders and edges using wet saws, and locked in with edge restraints. We compact the finished surface, sweep polymeric sand into all joints, and activate the sand with water. The result is a tight, interlocked surface that resists shifting, weeds, and insect intrusion. We walk you through care and maintenance before handing over the finished project.

Paver FAQ
Quality pavers installed on a properly prepared base last 25 to 50 years or more. Interlocking concrete pavers and natural stone are both extremely durable, especially in San Diego's mild climate where freeze-thaw cycles are not a concern. The key to longevity is base preparation -- a well-compacted gravel and sand foundation prevents shifting, settling, and cracking over time.
Pavers offer several advantages over poured concrete. They are stronger per unit area, flex with ground movement instead of cracking, and allow individual unit replacement if damage occurs. Pavers also drain better when installed with permeable joints, which matters in San Diego where stormwater runoff regulations are tightening. Poured concrete is typically less expensive upfront but costs more to repair and has a shorter lifespan in areas with soil movement.
Pavers are low maintenance. Occasional sweeping and rinsing keep them looking clean. Every few years, you may want to re-sand the joints and apply a sealer to protect against staining and enhance color. Weeds in joints can be managed with polymeric sand during installation, which hardens and prevents growth. If a single paver cracks or stains, you simply lift it out and replace it -- no jackhammering, no patching.
Yes. Interlocking concrete pavers are rated for vehicular traffic and are commonly used for driveways, parking areas, and even commercial loading zones. The key is base depth -- driveway installations require a thicker compacted gravel base (typically 6 to 8 inches) compared to a walkway or patio. We engineer every driveway base for the expected load, ensuring the pavers hold up under daily use without shifting.
There are dozens of paver patterns to choose from. The most popular include herringbone (90-degree and 45-degree), running bond, basket weave, and circular fan patterns. Pattern choice affects both the look and the structural interlock of the installation. Herringbone provides the strongest interlock and is our top recommendation for driveways. For patios and walkways, running bond and random ashlar patterns create a clean, modern look.
