The Sound of Water

Bring Your Landscape to Life

There is something deeply calming about the sound of moving water. It softens street noise, draws birds and butterflies, and turns a backyard into a place you actually want to spend time. In San Diego, where outdoor living is a year-round reality, a water feature is not just decoration -- it is the centerpiece of your landscape.

At Arcadian Landscape, we design and build water features that feel like they belong. Not factory-made pieces dropped onto a patio, but custom installations shaped by the natural contours of your property. Evan Weisman works with natural stone, native plantings, and recirculating systems to create fountains, waterfalls, streams, and ponds that age gracefully and require minimal upkeep.

Whether you want a simple bubbling rock near your front entry or a multi-tier waterfall cascading through your hillside garden, we build it from the ground up -- designed for San Diego's climate and your specific property.

What We Build

Water Feature Types

From quiet garden fountains to dramatic waterfalls, every feature is designed around your space, style, and budget.

Water Fountains

Fountains are the most versatile water feature we install. They fit courtyards, entryways, patios, and garden beds of any size. We work with natural stone, cast concrete, ceramic, and copper -- selecting materials that complement your home's architecture and the surrounding plantings.

Options range from a single basalt column bubbler to large tiered fountains with multiple spill points. Every fountain we build uses a recirculating pump housed in a concealed basin, so there is no wasted water and no visible plumbing. The sound profile varies too -- a gentle trickle for a meditation garden or a stronger flow to mask road noise along a busy street.

Waterfalls

San Diego is full of properties with natural elevation changes -- hillside lots in La Jolla, sloped backyards in Encinitas, terraced gardens in Rancho Santa Fe. These properties are perfect for waterfalls. We stack natural boulders and flagstone to create falls that look like they have been there for decades, not installed last month.

Our waterfalls range from subtle 2-foot drops feeding into a disappearing basin to dramatic 8-foot cascades flowing into a catch pond. We set each stone by hand, testing the water flow at every stage to get the right visual effect and sound. Plantings like maidenhair fern, canyon sunflower, and coastal sage are tucked into the rockwork for a finished look that blends with San Diego's native landscape.

Streams & Waterways

A stream connects different zones of your landscape. It can run alongside a walkway, wind through a garden, or link a waterfall to a pond at the bottom of a slope. Streams add movement and sound across a larger area than any single fountain or fall.

We build streams with a flexible liner, natural gravel bed, and carefully placed boulders that create riffles and small pools along the way. The width, depth, and speed are all controlled by the grade and rock placement. In flat yards, we use gentle recirculating pumps with a slight grade built into the streambed to keep water flowing naturally. Native sedges, rushes, and creeping ground covers planted along the banks soften the edges and attract beneficial insects.

Ponds & Pools

A pond turns your garden into a small ecosystem. Koi, goldfish, water lilies, lotus, and native aquatic plants all thrive in San Diego's mild climate. We build ponds from small 4-by-6 garden features to large naturalistic pools with multiple depth zones for fish, plants, and filtration.

Every pond includes a biological filtration system, a skimmer to remove surface debris, and an appropriately sized pump. We design shelves at different depths so you can grow a variety of aquatic plants -- submerged oxygenators, marginal plants along the edges, and floating species like water hyacinth that provide shade and reduce algae. For homeowners who want the look of a pond without the biology, we also build pondless water features with disappearing basins.

Why Water Features

More Than Just a Pretty View

Property Value and Curb Appeal

A well-designed water feature increases your property's perceived value and sets it apart from every other home on the block. In San Diego's competitive real estate market, outdoor living features are a major selling point. Buyers notice the sound before they even see the water -- it creates an immediate emotional response that flat hardscape and turf simply cannot match.

Sound Therapy and Stress Reduction

Research consistently shows that the sound of moving water lowers cortisol levels and reduces stress. It is not just pleasant background noise -- it actively calms the nervous system. For San Diego homeowners who work from home, entertain outdoors, or simply want a place to decompress after a long day, a water feature changes the entire feel of a backyard. The white noise effect also masks traffic, neighbors, and other urban sounds that are common in North County communities.

Native Aquatic Plants and Wildlife

San Diego's native plant palette includes several species that thrive near water. California bulrush, blue-eyed grass, deer grass, and western columbine all grow well along the margins of ponds and streams. These plantings attract hummingbirds, dragonflies, native bees, and other pollinators that benefit your entire garden. A water feature is not just an addition to your landscape -- it becomes the anchor of a small, thriving ecosystem right outside your door.

How We Work

Our Water Feature Process

From first conversation to the sound of water flowing, here is how we bring your vision to life.

Site Visit & Consultation

Evan visits your property to assess the terrain, soil, drainage patterns, existing utilities, and sun exposure. We discuss your vision -- the sound you want, the look you are after, how the feature fits into your larger landscape. This visit is free and carries no obligation.

Design & Material Selection

We create a detailed design showing placement, dimensions, stone selections, planting zones, and pump specifications. You see exactly what the feature will look like and how it integrates with patios, walkways, and plantings around it. Revisions are part of the process -- we refine until it is right.

Excavation & Build

Our crew handles all excavation, liner installation, plumbing, electrical connections, and stonework. Every boulder is placed by hand and tested with water flow before being set permanently. We work clean, protect your existing landscape, and keep you informed throughout.

Planting & Final Tuning

Once the stonework is set and water is flowing, we install aquatic and marginal plants, adjust flow rates for the sound you want, and fine-tune every detail. We walk you through pump operation, seasonal maintenance, and how to keep your feature looking its best year-round.

Common Questions

Water Feature FAQ

Most water features require minimal weekly maintenance. Fountains need occasional cleaning and water top-offs. Ponds with fish or plants require more attention, including filter checks, algae management, and seasonal plant care. We design every feature with easy maintenance in mind, using quality pumps and filtration systems that reduce upkeep.

Properly designed water features do not attract mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so any feature with moving water -- fountains, waterfalls, streams -- naturally prevents them. For ponds, we use pumps and circulation systems that keep water flowing. Adding mosquitofish is another effective, chemical-free solution.

Slopes are actually ideal for water features. Gravity-fed waterfalls and cascading streams work beautifully on hillside properties, which are common across San Diego and North County. A sloped yard gives us natural elevation changes to create dramatic, multi-tier water features that would require extensive engineering on flat ground.

Modern water features recirculate the same water continuously, so actual consumption is minimal -- mostly replacing what evaporates. In San Diego's climate, a well-designed recirculating fountain uses less water than a small patch of traditional lawn. We also offer rainwater harvesting integration for eco-conscious homeowners.

Water feature costs vary widely based on size, complexity, and materials. A simple standalone fountain starts around $2,000-$5,000 installed. Custom-built waterfalls and streams typically range from $8,000-$25,000+. Larger pond systems with aquatic plants and fish can run $15,000-$40,000+.
