Yards along La Jolla Hermosa Avenue and the streets that drop toward Camino de la Costa have one thing in common. They sit close to the water, and everything we build there has to survive salt air.

We are Arcadian Landscape, a design-first landscape design and construction company led by Evan Weisman. Evan holds a degree in Landscape Design from CSU and has more than a decade of hands-on experience in San Diego County.

What the coast does to a yard here

Salt-laden fog corrodes cheap fittings fast. We spec brass and stainless hardware where it touches soil and moisture, and we put a pressure regulator on every drip valve so lines run around 30 PSI instead of blowing off emitters.

Wind matters too. Plants that look fine in Carmel Valley can burn on a ridge-facing La Jolla Hermosa lot. We pick tough, coastal-adapted plantings and group them by water need so irrigation zones make sense.

Slopes, walls, and drainage

Many lots here step down toward the ocean. Water follows the slope, and it will find the weak spot behind an undersized wall.

Any retaining wall over three feet, measured from the bottom of the footing, needs engineering and a permit in the City of San Diego. We dig footings into undisturbed native soil and build drainage behind the wall with gravel and perforated pipe, so water leaves the wall instead of pushing on it.

Because much of La Jolla sits within coastal zone rules, we confirm what a given lot requires before we finalize a plan. That conversation happens early, not after the design is done.

Patios and walkways that stay put

Paver work on a sloped coastal lot fails at the base, not the surface. We set pavers over four to six inches of compacted Class II base, compacted in lifts, so the patio does not drift downhill over the next decade.
