Landscape Design and Construction in Bird Rock
The lots below La Jolla Boulevard, the ones that slope toward Camino de la Costa and the water, deal with two problems at once. Salt air and grade. We build for both from the first survey.
Bird Rock sits on a marine terrace. Most backyards here fall away toward the ocean, so a patio that reads flat on a plan often needs a retaining wall just to exist.
Why do coastal La Jolla yards need different planting?
Salt spray burns the wrong plants in a single season. We lean on agave, rosemary, coast rosemary, sea lavender, and other material that shrugs off the marine layer. May gray and June gloom keep things damp into early summer, which means drainage matters more here than irrigation volume.
Our drip systems run around 30 PSI with a pressure regulator on every valve. Salt-laden fog eats cheap fittings, so we spec the hardware for the coast.
Retaining walls and hardscape on a slope
Any wall over three feet, measured from the bottom of the footing, needs engineering and a permit in the City of San Diego. We see stacked-block walls all over Bird Rock that were built without either. They lean. When we rebuild one we dig the footing into undisturbed native soil and key it in.
For patios and walkways we set pavers on four to six inches of Class II base, compacted in lifts. On a sloped Bird Rock lot that base doubles as the thing keeping your patio from migrating downhill over the next ten years.
A full backyard rebuild here, design through construction, usually runs from the mid five figures into six, depending on wall footage and how much rock we hit. We give you the real number before we start.
What we handle in Bird Rock
Design, construction, paver patios, retaining walls, drip irrigation, and low-voltage lighting that survives the salt. We work the streets around Bird Rock Avenue and La Jolla Hermosa, down toward Calumet Park and Windansea.
And Evan walks every property himself. You talk to the person designing the build, not a salesperson. See our La Jolla landscaping page for the wider area, or our landscape design and hardscape services.
If we build something in Bird Rock you are happy with, a Google review that names the street and the work helps your neighbors find us.
