Two Different Companies, Both Called Landscapers
In San Diego, landscaping services covers two separate trades. Maintenance crews handle weekly mowing, trimming, and sprinkler adjustments. Design-build contractors draw the plan and build the patios, walls, lighting, drainage, and planting. Hiring the wrong one is the most common reason a yard project stalls halfway through.

Both types show up in the same search results. Both answer the phone as landscapers.
One keeps a yard alive on a weekly route. The other rebuilds the yard from grade up, which means grading, drainage, base material, structural walls, and a plan that has to work in ten years, not just in June. The pricing and the license class are not the same either.
Evan Weisman runs Arcadian Landscape as a design and construction company. California Contractor License #978145, C-27 Landscape Contractor, bonded and insured. We draw the plan and build it. We do not run mow routes.

How much do landscaping services cost in San Diego?
Monthly maintenance on a standard residential lot in Carmel Valley or Encinitas generally runs $120 to $300, and climbs when there is heavy hedge work or an HOA frontage standard to hold.
Design-build gets quoted per project. A paver patio with a planting refresh usually lands somewhere in the $15,000 to $35,000 range in our quotes. A full backyard with hardscape, drainage, irrigation, lighting, and planting is commonly $60,000 and up, and coastal La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe properties push higher because slope and access drive labor more than materials do.
Access is the line item people never expect. A yard we can only reach through a 32 inch side gate means everything moves by wheelbarrow, and base rock alone can take a full day longer than the same job with truck access.
When a Maintenance Crew Is the Wrong Call
We get brought in behind installs that were never built for the ground they sit on. A patio set on sand over native clay off Del Mar Heights Road looked fine through summer. First real December rain, the field settled and the joints opened.
Pavers need a compacted aggregate base, placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped in one pass, with the grade pitched away from the house. That is construction work, not route work. Our hardscape and paver installation builds start there every time.
Same story with sprinklers. A crew swaps a broken head, the yard still browns out, and nobody checks static pressure at the hose bib. Rotors want roughly 45 to 55 psi at the head to throw their rated radius. Below that they mist and fall short, and no amount of extra run time fixes it. That pressure test is where our irrigation repair visits start.
Do you need a design before construction?
For anything past a single bed, yes. Evan holds a degree in Landscape Design from CSU and has spent over a decade building in San Diego County, and the plan is where the money gets saved.
Drainage, utility locations, tree canopy at maturity, and how the coastal wind moves across a Solana Beach or Cardiff lot all get resolved on paper. Changing a wall on a drawing costs an eraser. Changing it after the footing is poured costs a demo day.
North County HOA submittals matter here too. Del Sur, Santaluz, and Bressi Ranch all want a plan set before work starts, and a maintenance company will not produce one. Our landscape design process covers that step.
Questions to Ask Before You Sign
- What is your license number and class, and is it C-27?
- Will you give me a plan before demolition starts?
- What base depth and compaction method are you using under the hardscape?
- Who is on site the day work happens, and who do I call when something changes?
- What happens to the water when it rains hard for three days?
Ask a maintenance company those questions and the honest ones will tell you it is outside what they do. That is a good answer. It just means you are calling the wrong trade for the job.
Most homeowners eventually need both. Build first, then hand it to a maintenance crew to hold. The order matters, because a yard built without drainage becomes somebody else's weekly problem forever.
If we designed or built your yard in La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas, or anywhere across North County San Diego, mention the neighborhood and the work we did in your Google review. That detail helps other homeowners more than a star rating does.
