How do you choose a landscape designer in Rancho Santa Fe?

Choosing a landscape designer in Rancho Santa Fe comes down to three checks: an active California contractor license, experience with Covenant design review, and a designer who walks the property personally before drawing anything. Ask who will be on site, and ask to see how drainage and grading are handled.

Most of the lots we see out here are large, sloped, and hard to read from a street view. A drawing made from a satellite image misses it.

Why does the license matter?

A design that cannot be built is a picture. We hold California C-27 Landscape Contractor License #978145 and are bonded and insured, so the person drawing the plan is accountable for the build. Check any contractor's license number on the state board site before you sign.

What should a site walk cover?

Evan Weisman walks every property himself. We look at where water leaves the lot during a hard winter rain, how steep the grade runs, and where an existing wall is leaning.

  • Drainage paths and low spots
  • Slopes that need a retaining wall (anything over three feet measured from the bottom of the footing needs engineering and a permit in the City of San Diego)
  • Irrigation age and valve locations
  • Sun and wind exposure by season

It takes a while. That is the point.

How does Covenant design review change the plan?

Many Rancho Santa Fe properties answer to Covenant review, so the plan has to fit the community's character before it fits your wish list. Ask any designer how they handle that step and how long they expect it to add. Our Rancho Santa Fe Covenant page covers how we plan around it.

What drives the cost of a design?

Lot size, slope, and how much hardscape is involved drive the number more than plant choices. Walls, patios, and drainage are where the budget goes. We give honest ranges after the site walk, not before.

What do we tell homeowners to ask?

Ask who is on site day to day. Ask whether the designer also builds. Ask what happens when the grade surprises everyone, because it will. We design and build, so the same people answer those questions.
