Landscaping in Del Mar Terrace
Arcadian Landscape designs and builds yards in Del Mar Terrace, the hillside neighborhood east of Camino del Mar. We are a California C-27 licensed landscape contractor, bonded and insured, and Evan Weisman walks every property personally before a plan is drawn.

Del Mar Terrace sits on a slope. That one fact drives almost every decision we make here.
Lots step down toward the ocean, and many back yards are a series of narrow terraces held up by older walls. Some of those walls are in good shape. Some are leaning. We check each one before we design anything that depends on it.
What does a Del Mar Terrace yard need to handle?
Three things come up on nearly every walk-through: grade, salt air, and the marine layer.
Grade first. Any retaining wall over three feet, measured from the bottom of the footing, needs engineering and a permit. We dig footings into undisturbed native soil, backfill with clean gravel, and set a perforated drain line at the base so water has somewhere to go besides behind the wall.
Salt air is next. Fog rolling in off the water coats fixtures and fittings in a thin layer of salt, and cheap hardware gives out fast. We spec brass or composite fittings for irrigation and lighting, and we run drip zones at around 30 PSI with a regulator on every valve.
The marine layer matters for planting. May and June gray keeps beds cool and damp, then September and October bring the hottest, driest stretch of the year. We choose plants that handle both ends of that swing.
- Hillside drainage and French drains behind walls
- Retaining walls and stepped terraces
- Paver patios and walkways set on compacted Class II base
- Low-voltage LED lighting for stairs and paths
- Drip irrigation sized for small, sloped beds
How do we build a patio on a sloped Del Mar lot?
Base work decides whether a patio lasts. On a slope, an undersized base creeps downhill.
We set pavers on four to six inches of compacted base, laid in lifts, with the surface pitched away from the house. We tie the edges into a restraint so the field cannot spread. It is slow work. It is also the reason a patio still sits flat after ten winters.
Lots near Camino del Mar and Stratford Court are often small, so we keep layouts simple. One good gathering space beats three cramped ones.
Design first, then build
Every project is a collaboration between designer and homeowner. We start with a walk of the property, talk through how you use the yard, and then draw a plan you can review before any work starts. Evan oversees the build himself, so the person who drew the plan is the person on site.
We work across Del Mar, including Del Mar, Olde Del Mar and Del Mar Heights, as well as landscape design, hardscape and landscape lighting projects throughout North County San Diego.
If we have worked on your yard in Del Mar Terrace, a Google review that names the service and your neighborhood helps the next homeowner find us. To talk through your project, call 858.617.9038 or email evan@arcadianlandscape.com.
