Are pavers or concrete better for a San Diego patio?
For most San Diego patios, pavers cost more upfront but last longer and resist cracking on our clay soils. Pavers run about $18 to $30 per square foot installed; poured concrete runs $10 to $18. Stamped concrete sits in the middle but cracks along control joints. Pavers also let you lift and reset a section.

We pulled out a cracked concrete patio in Encinitas in April. Eight years old. The slab had heaved along a control joint where the expansive clay underneath swelled every wet winter.
The owner asked the obvious question. Pour it again, or switch to pavers?
Why concrete cracks here
San Diego sits on a lot of expansive clay, especially inland toward Rancho Santa Fe and Escondido. Clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. A rigid slab fights that movement and loses.
Pavers move with the ground. Each unit is small, so soil shift shows up as a minor lippage you can reset, not a crack across the whole patio.
The part nobody sees
Base prep decides whether a paver patio lasts ten years or two. We dig down 6 to 8 inches, lay class II road base in lifts, and compact each lift with a plate compactor to about 95 percent. Then an inch of bedding sand, screeded flat.
Cut that base short and the pavers ripple within a season. We have torn out plenty of jobs where the last crew skipped compaction.
| Option | Installed cost per sq ft | Lifespan | Repairable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poured concrete | $10 to $18 | 10 to 15 years | No, patch shows |
| Stamped concrete | $15 to $25 | 10 to 15 years | No, color is hard to match |
| Pavers | $18 to $30 | 25+ years | Yes, lift and reset |
What about coastal homes?
Near the water in Cardiff and Solana Beach, drainage matters more than looks. Pavers with open joints let water percolate instead of sheeting toward the house. On a flat lot we still cut a slope of about 1 to 2 percent away from the foundation.
Which one we usually recommend
If the budget allows, pavers. The upfront premium pays back the first time a tree root or a wet winter moves the ground and you reset a few units instead of demolishing a slab.
Concrete still makes sense for tight budgets and simple shapes. And we will tell you straight which one fits your yard.
