Why does base prep matter more than paver choice?
A patio built on 4 inches of compacted road base holds up. A patio built on 2 inches over native clay heaves within two winters, especially on the clay-heavy lots we see around Carlsbad and Carmel Valley.
We excavate 6 to 8 inches on most jobs, compact in lifts, then set a bedding layer before the pavers go down. Skipping a lift or two saves a contractor a day of labor and costs the homeowner a patio that cracks at the joints.
