What does an outdoor kitchen cost in San Diego?

A built-in outdoor kitchen in San Diego runs about $12,000 to $45,000. Price tracks three things: countertop material, how many appliances you want, and whether the site needs a new gas line and electrical run. A basic grill island lands near $12,000. A full cook station with a side burner, fridge, and pizza oven climbs past $35,000.

We built a U-shaped kitchen in Carmel Valley last spring. The homeowner wanted a 36-inch grill, a side burner, and a kegerator. The slab and gas line ate up more of the budget than the appliances did.

That surprises people. The shiny stainless gets the attention. The dirt work pays the bill.

Where the money actually goes

Most of a San Diego outdoor kitchen budget is hidden. You are paying for a footing that will not settle, a gas line sized for the BTU load, and a counter that survives coastal salt air.

Here is roughly how the costs split on a mid-range build.

ComponentTypical costNotes
Concrete footing and framing$3,000 to $7,000Depth depends on soil and slope
Gas line and electrical$1,500 to $4,500Longer runs from the meter cost more
Countertop, granite or porcelain$2,500 to $6,000Porcelain holds up better near the coast
Appliances$3,000 to $20,000Grill, fridge, burner, pizza oven
Veneer and finish$2,000 to $6,000Stone, stucco, or tile

Why coastal salt air changes the build

Homes within a mile or two of the water in La Jolla or Del Mar fight corrosion the whole way. We spec 304 or 316 stainless for those jobs. The cheaper 430 stainless pits within a couple of seasons of marine air.

And we keep the gas manifold accessible. Salt finds connections. You want to reach them without tearing out veneer.

Do you need a permit?

Usually, yes. Any new gas line or electrical circuit in the City of San Diego needs a permit and inspection. Some HOAs in Rancho Santa Fe and Carmel Valley also cap structure height and require setback from property lines, so we read the CC&Rs before we pour.

Skipping the permit is the kind of shortcut that surfaces at resale. We do not take it.

How long does it take?

Plan on three to six weeks from demo to first cook. The slab cure alone is about a week before we set block. Custom countertop fabrication adds another week or two depending on the shop's backlog.

Rain delays it. June gloom does not, since the marine layer burns off by midday most days.
