Why the NFL grass push comes down to what is under the blade

A natural lawn survives in San Diego when the soil under it drains. That means six to eight inches of sandy loam root zone over decompacted subgrade, a one to two percent fall toward a drain, and rotating stream nozzles at 40 PSI. Skip any of it and the lawn thins by year two.

After the World Cup fields were rebuilt in natural grass, NFL players started pressing for the same treatment, and Sean Payton said he expects more grass fields "where it's possible." That last clause is the entire job. Possible means sun, drainage, and a root zone somebody built on purpose.

A homeowner wants real lawn for the dog and the kids. The yard is builder fill that got tracked flat by heavy equipment during grading, capped with about two inches of imported topsoil, then sodded. It looks perfect through the first fall. And then it goes yellow in the same three spots every June, and by the second year the corners are bare.

What goes under a lawn that actually lives?

We rip the top 8 to 10 inches before anything green touches it. On a Carmel Valley backyard off Del Mar Trails Road, the pick punched through a hardpan layer at about seven inches that the original grading crew had compacted to something close to a driveway subbase. Water was standing in sheets after ordinary May Gray drizzle, not even real rain.

The rebuild after that is not complicated. It is just work.

We blend a sandy loam root zone, roughly 70 percent washed sand to 30 percent compost by volume, and place it six to eight inches deep. Finish grade gets a one to two percent fall to a catch basin, tied into 4-inch solid pipe and daylighted at the curb where the city right of way allows. Then irrigation. Fixed spray heads running at 30 PSI atomize badly in the afternoon onshore wind and half the water never lands where it was aimed. We use rotating stream nozzles at 40 to 45 PSI, which put down closer to 0.4 inches per hour, slow enough that clay-heavy fill can actually take it in. Neither one is the default answer. We have talked homeowners out of both.

Where we tell homeowners not to plant lawn

Shade is the first disqualifier. Under mature Torrey pines and old eucalyptus in Point Loma, a yard getting under four hours of direct sun will not hold turfgrass no matter how good the soil is. Slopes are the second. Anything steeper than 3:1, common on the canyon-edge lots in Del Mar Heights, sheds water off the surface faster than the root zone can absorb it, so the top of the slope stays dry while the toe stays soggy.

Narrow side yards under six feet are the third. Not enough sun, no room for a mower, and the irrigation overspray stains the stucco.

HOA rules push the decision too. Design review in the Del Sur and Santaluz communities limits how much front-yard lawn area is allowed and requires plant palette approval before anything goes in, so the lawn usually ends up in the back where nobody has to approve it. Payton had it right. More grass where it is possible. In a San Diego yard, possible gets decided about ten inches below the blade, months before anyone sees anything green.
