Drip vs spray irrigation in San Diego

Drip belongs on planting beds, slopes, and drought tolerant plants because it delivers water to the root zone at 20 to 30 PSI. Spray heads still make sense under real lawn. Most San Diego yards we build run both, split onto separate valves so each zone keeps its own runtime and start time.

We opened a valve box on a slope job off Rancho Santa Fe Road in Olivenhain and found four rotors trying to water a bed of agaves, rosemary, and westringia. Half the water sheeted downhill and ended up in the neighbor's driveway apron. The plants at the top of the slope were crisp. The ones at the toe were sitting in mud and rotting at the crown.

That yard did not need more water. It needed different emitters.

What drip actually does

Drip runs at low pressure. We regulate residential drip zones to 25 PSI with a filter and pressure regulator right at the valve, because inline tubing rated for 25 PSI will pop fittings at the 60 to 80 PSI most San Diego street pressure delivers. Skip the regulator and you will be chasing blowouts for years.

Emitters come in 0.5, 1, and 2 GPH. A five gallon shrub gets one or two 1 GPH emitters set 12 to 18 inches off the crown, so roots chase the water outward instead of sitting in a wet collar at the base.

For mass planting we run inline tubing with emitters at 12 inch spacing, gridded across the bed under mulch. Grid it. Do not snake one line past each plant and call it a zone.

Where spray heads still win

Real turf, and honestly not much else. A fescue or hybrid bermuda lawn needs even coverage across the whole surface, which means head to head spacing and matched precipitation nozzles. Rotary nozzles put down roughly 0.4 inches per hour and want about 40 PSI at the nozzle. Fixed sprays run closer to 1.5 inches per hour at 30 PSI.

Mixing those two nozzle types on one valve is the most common thing we find on yards built by someone else. One half of the lawn gets four times the water of the other half, and no controller schedule fixes it.

How much does converting a spray zone to drip cost?

One front yard planting bed converted from spray to drip usually runs $600 to $1,200, which covers the filter and regulator at the valve, capping the old risers, and gridding the bed with inline tubing. A full system rebuild on a quarter acre with a smart controller lands somewhere between $4,500 and $9,000.

The spread is wide because of what is already in the ground. A yard where we can pull existing lateral lines and reuse the trench is cheap. A yard where the mainline runs under a paver patio someone installed over it is not.

The June problem nobody schedules for

Coastal overcast in May and June keeps yards damp while controllers are still running the summer program somebody set the year before. Then the first October Santa Ana arrives and the same schedule is suddenly not enough for two straight weeks.

We set four seasonal programs on every controller we install and adjust the percentage rather than rewriting start times. It takes ten minutes in the spring and saves the plants in the fall.

What we check on a first walk

  1. Static pressure at the hose bib nearest the meter.
  2. Pressure at the last head on the longest zone.
  3. Whether any single valve is feeding both lawn and beds.
  4. Emitter count against plant size, not plant count.
