What type of grass grows best in San Diego?

Bermuda and hybrid Bermuda grow best in full-sun San Diego yards, while tall fescue handles part shade better but needs more water. Kikuyu spreads fast near the coast and often becomes a weed. We match grass to sun hours, soil, and irrigation before any sod goes down.

Grass choice is a site decision. A Carmel Valley yard with eight hours of sun and an Encinitas yard under a coastal marine layer need different lawns.

How do the common San Diego grasses compare?

GrassSun neededMowing heightWater demandBest fit
Hybrid Bermuda6 to 8 hours1 to 2 inchesModerateFull-sun inland yards
Tall fescue4 to 6 hours3 to 4 inchesHighPart-shade yards
Zoysia5 to 8 hours1.5 to 2.5 inchesModerateDense, slow-spreading lawns
Kikuyu5 to 8 hours1 to 2 inchesModerateRarely our pick; it invades beds

Why do we avoid kikuyu near planting beds?

Kikuyu runs underground and over hardscape edges. It climbs into planting beds and lifts paver joints.

We have pulled it out of succulent beds more than once. Pulling it is slow work, and the runners come back from any piece left in the soil.

What does soil do to the lawn decision?

Coastal sandy soil drains fast and dries out between irrigation cycles. Inland clay, common in parts of Carlsbad, holds water and suffocates roots.

For clay we amend the soil and make sure drainage works first. Grass planted into a bad grade fails in the first summer, whatever the variety.

When is the right time to plant a lawn here?

Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and zoysia establish best from late spring through early summer, once soil is warm. Tall fescue does better in early fall.

Summer heat is hard on new sod. Fresh sod needs frequent shallow watering for the first two to three weeks, then deeper and less often.

How should irrigation be set up for a lawn?

Spray zones for turf should be separate from drip zones for shrubs. Mixed zones overwater one or underwater the other.

If your lawn is brown while the sprinklers run, the problem is often coverage or pressure, not the grass. See our irrigation repair and install page.

If you want the whole yard planned around sun, soil, and water, our landscape design process starts with a walk of the property. We work across Encinitas and the rest of North County, and Evan Weisman is on site for the design.

If we built or repaired your lawn, we would value a Google review that names the service and your neighborhood.
