Landscaping on the Mount Soledad Hillside in La Jolla

Landscaping in Mount Soledad, La Jolla, starts with the slope. Steep lots need engineered retaining walls, planned drainage, and drought-tolerant planting that holds soil. Arcadian Landscape, led by Evan Weisman, designs and builds hillside yards across La Jolla and North County San Diego.

Mount Soledad yards rarely sit flat. Homes along La Jolla Scenic Drive and the streets climbing toward the cross step down the hill, and the backyards follow.

That changes the work.

What does a sloped La Jolla yard need first?

Water. Before we draw a patio or pick a plant, we look at where runoff goes during the first heavy storm of winter. On a hillside, water that pools behind a wall or against a foundation causes more damage than any design flaw.

We plan drainage behind every retaining wall, with perforated pipe and gravel backfill that sends water out and away from the structure.

Retaining walls and permits

In the City of San Diego, a wall over three feet measured from the bottom of the footing needs engineering and a permit. Many Mount Soledad lots need terracing to create any usable flat space, so walls are part of most projects here. We build footings into undisturbed native soil and key them in, because stacked block set on fill will lean within a few seasons.

Pavers and patios on a grade

For patios and walkways we set pavers on four to six inches of compacted Class II base. On a slope, that base is what keeps the surface from creeping downhill. See our hardscape work and paver installation for how we approach it.

How do views and fog shape the planting plan?

Many Mount Soledad homes are bought for the view, so plant height matters. We select shrubs and trees that frame the ocean and the city lights without blocking them at maturity.

Coastal marine layer in late spring and early summer keeps mornings cool and damp. Drought-tolerant plantings, succulents, and native grasses do well here, and they hold soil on steep grades better than lawn.

  • Terraced planting beds that slow runoff
  • Drip irrigation with a pressure regulator on every valve
  • Low-voltage lighting for steps and wall faces
  • Decomposed granite paths where pavers are not needed

Design-first, with the owner on site

Every project is a collaboration between designer and homeowner. Evan has a landscape design degree from CSU and more than a decade of design and construction experience in San Diego County. He walks your property, listens to how you use the yard, and oversees the build himself.

We are a California licensed C-27 landscape contractor (#978145), bonded and insured. HOA design review is common in parts of La Jolla, and we prepare plans with that review in mind.
