We start by checking how water moves. On lots with a slope toward the house, we build in drainage before we plan a patio. A paver surface needs a compacted base of 4 to 6 inches and about 1/4 inch of slope per foot away from the slab.

Irrigation is the second check. Older spray zones often mix shade plants and full-sun plants on one valve. We rezone to drip, run at around 30 PSI with a regulator, and test each zone before planting.

Any retaining wall over 3 feet, measured from the bottom of the footing, needs engineering and a permit. We tell homeowners this up front, because a wall built without either tends to lean within a couple of winters.
