Eden Gardens sits east of the train tracks and Highway 101, tucked between Lomas Santa Fe Drive and the edge of San Elijo Lagoon. It's one of the older residential pockets in Solana Beach, and the lots reflect that. Smaller footprints, mature trees, narrow driveways that were never built for a skid steer to get through.

We've worked backyards here that slope down toward the lagoon side of the neighborhood. That grade changes how we plan a job before a single plant goes in the ground.

Soil and drainage near the lagoon

Lots closer to San Elijo Lagoon hold water longer than the sandier ground up toward Highway 101. On one job we hit a hardpan clay layer about 10 inches down that wasn't draining toward the lagoon side at all. We ended up cutting a French drain along the low fence line before we touched the planting beds. Skip that step here and you get standing water after the first real rain of the season.

Salt air and irrigation hardware

Being this close to the coast and the lagoon means salt-laden fog rolls through most mornings, especially in the late spring marine layer months. We spec brass or stainless fittings on every irrigation valve out here. Standard plastic fittings corrode and start leaking within a couple of seasons this close to the water.
